[Iorgu Iordan: Research directions in Romanian linguistics]
During the Iaşi period of his research activity (1926–1946), the great Romanist Iorgu Iordan has innovated by overcoming the Neogrammarian “positivism”. This orientation was manifested, especially through his vision on the way Romanistics’ evolution was being studied (Introduction to the Study of Romance Languages..., 1932, a work which had been translated and adapted in many foreign languages) and through the interest for the present forms of spoken Romanian, such as phonetics, morphology, syntax and vocabulary following the tendencies shown in the language use (Contemporary Romanian. A Grammar of ‘Mistakes’, 1943). The same vision is also perceived in his research of “linguistic” stylistics following the general model designed by Ch. Bally in opposition with traditional stylistics called “literary” (The Stylistics of Romanian, 1944). The author also emphasizes Iorgu Iordan’s interest to researching the Romanian subdialects, envisaged through the development of linguistic geography, and the general image due to linguistic atlases.
