| Rezumat: | [“Decreed” oikonyms. Sociolinguistic aspects] The present paper relies on the data gathered from Decree no. 799 of December 17, 1964, regarding the change of certain settlement names in Romania. The categories of oikonyms targeted confirm the fact that the decision was imposed by the central administration and was aimed at the elimination of every name that did not tally with the ideas of the new regime, instituted forcedly in Romania. All the numerous categories that make up the corpus of oikonyms were affected, thereby proving the tendency of the regime to break the connection with any name related to the old state of affairs in the country, as well as with words that could interfere with the fulfilment of the “ideals of the new man, the builder of socialism”. The extent and the means of achievement reveal, on the one hand, a genuine case of damnatio memoriae and, on the other, a Manichaean type of delimitation between good and evil, positive and negative. Due to the vast material, the present study only takes into consideration names derived from anthroponyms, which represent 14.5% of the total of names subjected to change, while the other examples will be the object of future papers. |
