| Rezumat: | I argue for the distinction between sentences with an affective meaning manifested in prosody (notated with the exclamation mark) and exclamatives as a distinct clause type (incompatible with the other clause types – declarative, interrogative, directive, optative – and not restricted to main clauses). I show that the defining criteria of exclamatives – presuppositionality and non-canonicity – are satisfied by clauses which always show a non-prosodic marking at the clause level (verbal mood, complementizers, fronted constituents). Based on the alternatives involved by non-canonicity, I propose a general classification of exclamatives in which the main divide is between scalar and non-scalar. I present the main types of exclamatives in Romanian, as well as some types that can be considered intermediate between exclamatives and declaratives. |
