Rezumat:I discuss the semantics of the Romanian clitic adverb mai. I follow Donazzan and Mardale‟s (2010) characterization of mai as an additive particle operating on events, but I show that it is not limited to the temporal domain. I present various readings of mai as particular instances of the additive use, depending on the choice of the parameter by which the at-issue event differs from the antecedent/presupposed event (this parameter can be the time interval, but also a participant to the event, the location, etc.). I further show that the antecedent event is not necessarily presupposed to be true, but can also be salient in the context as a possibility, which accounts for a reading considered problematic by Donazzan and Mardale. Finally, I point out two readings that cannot be subsumed under the additive use: the attenuative reading and the spurious use in exclamatives.
