| Rezumat: | [Study of the Adverb chipurile as an Evidential Marker] This paper deals with the Romanian adverb chipurile (it is said that, allegedly) with a view to point out its evidential value when indicating the information source. The theoretical framework is provided by Dendale, Tasmowski (2001), Plungian (2001), Aikhenvald (2004), Gâţă (2009) who analyse the types of evidence supporting a statement, according to which we may identify direct evidentiality (knowledge acquired through visual or auditory experience) and indirect evidentiality (inferred or reported knowledge). In this context, this paper aims at highlighting: 1) the type of information source that the adverb chipurile is likely to indicate; 2) its scope, whether it functions as internal modifier or overarches a whole clause; 3) its position within an utterance; 4) the tenses it occurs with; 5) whether it may also be used as intensifier of evidential meaning conveyed by a grammatical marker such as the conditional mood. Moreover, the paper assesses the relationship between epistemic modality and evidentiality since, more often than not, the use of this adverb pertains both to the information source and to the speaker’s attitude toward the propositional content transmitted. |
