Rezumat:[Can one talk in Romanian about unisex (first) names?]
The category of unisex (first) names has not benefited of previous approaches in Romanian specialised literature, while in other language areas several studies have been devoted to the topic in question in the past decades. Anthroponomastically, unisex (first) names can be considered unconventional anthroponyms due to their reduced ability to convey (intersexual) individualisation. Conventional anthroponyms (being officially established) imply a transparent nominal distribution (see the nomenclators that inventory first names specific to female individuals vs first names specific to male individuals).
While in other geographical areas unisex (first) names are accounted for by the adjacent naming custom, in the Romanian ethnolinguistic community their occurrence is sporadic and, therefore, surprising, related rather to the import of foreign naming patterns.
The present study looks at the way in which unisex first names enter and spread in the autochthonous onomastic system and, by comparison, follows the same phenomenon in languages in which this anthroponymic practice is traditional (English, French, Italian and Russian). Finally, the paper tries to provide an answer to the question referring to whether we can talk about unisex (first) names in Romanian.
