| Rezumat: | [The status of nicknames in a Gypsy community from the north-western part of Romania] The present paper aims at analysing the functions of nicknames. A nickname singularises an individual’s physical or psychological characteristics, his/her hobbies and interests, or even social status. Thus, nicknames can lead to the establishment of interpersonal relationships founded on familiarity and solidarity, or hostility. Starting from a linguistic material consisting of nicknames that were collected from the Gypsy community in the town of Șomcuta Mare, this study proposes a classification of nicknames and aims at providing a phonetic, morphological and lexical analysis of these names, in an attempt to prove that nicknames mirror the relationship that exists between an individual and the social context. |
