In the ancient Romanian translations of the Bible, the concept of ‘monarch’ was rendered differently according to thepolitical- historical contexts, by Rom. împărat (‘emperor’) in the case of the texts written in Moldavia and Wallachia and by Rom. crai (‘prince’, ‘king’) in the case of the biblical translations made in Transylvania. While in Moldavia and Wallachia the supreme political model of the monarch was traditionally the emperor (according to the model of the Byzantine basileus), in Transylvania – the scene of the confrontation, since the second half of the sixteenthcentury, between the Calvinistprincipesand the Catholic emperor – the Romanian term crai (‘prince’, ‘king’) was preferred to the term împărat (‘emperor’) in the biblical translations.
