Rezumat:The goal of this paper is to look again at the very well-known development of the periphrastic perfect in the Modern Romance languages in the light of recent approaches to the passive based on Collins (2005) (see also Cyrino (2009), who develops very similar ideas from the same starting point). Alongside the diachronic analysis, the paper aims to provide a general and somewhat novel picture of the nature of both auxiliaries and participles, something which, despite the great familiarity of periphrastic tenses of this form in many European languages, has not really emerged clearly before. Another construction which has been somewhat neglected, and which we briefly analyse, is the English have-causative construction. Further, we compare and contrast this Romance development with the development of split-ergativity from a Sanskrit passive in some Indo-Iranian languages.
