Rezumat:The paper is devoted to the analysis of the interaction of clausal modality and clausal negation. The article is organized as follows: in section 1 the author outlines the theoretical framework within which the meanings of modality in contemporary Romanian are analysed. It is assumed that modality comprises three basic semantic dimensions: (i) epistemic (strong probability, weak probability, certainty, evidentiality); (ii) participant-internal modality (more or less identical with dynamic modality: ability); (iii) participant-external modality (divided into (a) deontic modality – permission and obligation and (b) non-deontic modality – possibility and necessity).
In section 2 the author presents the (semi)grammaticalized means of expressing modality. In contemporary Romanian modality can be expressed by different means: modal verbal operators (MvOp, also called modal (semi)auxiliary verbs), the category of mood, lexical means (verbs, adverbs, and adjectives) and modal tags. Further on, the five patterns of structures with MvOp are presented.
In section 3 the author discusses three basic negation placement strategies: (Neg) (MvOp) (p))), (MvOp) (Neg) (p))) and (Neg) (MvOp) (Neg (p))). Only the first strategy is permitted for all patterns with MvOp and this strategy shows the modal square of oppositions (probability ~ non-probability; ability ~ non-ability; permission ~ non-permission possibility ~ non-possibility and so on). Only the second strategy will highlight the positive vs. negative polarity opposition. The third strategy is, on the one hand, a means of expressing double negation in Romanian and, on the other hand, a way of highlighting the scalable range of modal meanings in a language and their complex interactions.
