Rezumat:[Free indirect discourse and possible worlds]
The article proposes an account within a framework of possible world semantics and formal semantics of the denotation of free indirect sentences selected from narrative fiction. The issue of what constitutes free indirect discourse is discussed, and a possible world semantic framework is provided for the formal representations of the selected examples. The analysis indicates that the denotation of free indirect discourse depends on the nature of parentheticals or control predicates with which it is associated. Thus, in the case of non-factive parentheticals, FID describes an episode in a world, w2 or w3 accessible from a (central) world of the story, while the larger discourse structure, which contains the parenthetical, expresses the protagonist’s attitude to the proposition expressed by FID or to set of possible propositions, in the case of questions. If the control predicate is factive, FID describes a state of things in a world, w1, compatible with the story, for which the narrator is responsible. The analysis also captures the expressions that sustain the dual perspective articulated by FID sentences, some of these expressions describing states of things in worlds in which the character’s reflections are actualized, while others are about the central world of the story, in which what the narrator tells is actualized. FID emerges thus as a dual mode.
