Rezumat: | An innovative method in object hermeneutics – endogene hermeneutics – designed to allow for intensive explorations of visual language in abstract art creations has been used to spot, alongside symbolic meanings underlying sculptural motifs in Brancusi’s work, the main streams in the master’s aesthetic program (monograph published in 2010). While it is well known how Brancusio would often prompt fellow artists to comply with stone, or wood, or metal ‘languages’, it is by now possible to establish the way several notorious motifs in the sculptor’s work such as, for instance, The Table of the Silence in the Targu Jiu Ensemble, Romania, convey an allegoric discourse imbued with material symbolism. Such findings open up prospects for Gaston Bachelard’s theses on material imagination underlying literary texts to be developed and refined using data associated to the creation and ideation of one of the main founders of modern abstract sculpture. This has of course little to do with engaging into a straitforward comparison of two widely different works. On the contrary, at stake is an unexpected chance to pair what Vincent Therrien called Gaston Bachelard’s «revolution» in literary criticism with Brancusi’s revolution in sculpture which amounted to a radical shift in principles and goals of sculpture making. It ultimately turns conspicous that conceiving of the arts in terms of material languages grows tantamount to postulating human imagination to hold a global culture foundation – while shape languages are only born and built within ethnic frontiers. Final considerations are provided about endogene hermeneutics which explain the operation of the method as well as about goals and strategies with what seems promissed to turn into a self contained discipline of huge scope – object hermeneutics. |
