Rezumat:The paper uses a new intensive analytical technique – endogenous hermeneutics – to explore material symbolism in Brancusi’s Gate of the Kiss (1938), part of The Targu-Jiu Ensemble, a World War I memorial. The Gate epitomizes lifelong strivings with this founder of modern sculpture to explore materials as a worldwide matrix of cultural value. Additional reference to Brancusi’s Kiss (1907), a direct inspiration source for the Gate, is meant to expand discussion on material symbolism in Brancusi’s work – or what amounts to be a leading composition principle with his art. Indeed, it may be argued that in conceiving of sculpture as expressive of material language rather than of shape language, Brancusi initiated a major shift in conventional aesthetic principles ushering in un-hoped for chances to bridge gaps across mutually segregated cultural paradigms. While strikingly deprived of common commemorative or space vs. time direct reference to war waging or war heroism, visual discourse in the Gate of the Kiss deliberately highlights archetypal and material motifs articulated into a reconciliation symbol addressed to the human species at large. Arguments announce more ponderous findings in a recently published monograph covering Brancusi’s whole work. In endogenous hermeneutics, a method mainly informed by symbolic anthropology, interpretation is grounded on intensive morphological analyses designed to identify what might be termed the sculptural vocabulary inherent to an artist’s work. Findings resulting from hermeneutic analyses of abstract sculpture heavily depend on data provided by art historians and critics. They may profit from cooperation by symbolic anthropologists. They are likely to considerably enhance tasks and responsibilities incumbent on art historians and critics.
