Antonomasia is a linguistic process, commonly used in the Romanian language to create proper names from common names or vice versa. Several names of monasteries in Romania originate from common names with a strong significance in the collective memory. They are names in the religious sphere, generic geographical names, entopic names, plant names, names with historical and social meanings or different common names. Along with these, other lexical and grammatical classes – adjectives, verbs, interjections – are accidentally related to the names of monasteries. Entrenched as proper names, the names of monasteries acquire cultural, historical and religious values, enriching the sphere of Romanian onomastics.
