Rezumat: | [The typology of conventional vs. unconventional anthroponyms in Romanian fairy tales] This paper discusses conventional vs. unconventional proper names from a series of Romanian fairy tales. Inside this species of the epic genre, name- giving seems to take place in accordance with the precepts of the narrated world. Among the encountered naming mechanisms, there exists the preference for generic anthroponyms (formed, for example, from appellatives). One of the functions of these newly coined names is to create an atmosphere specific to a certain time and space. In the texts explored both folk and modern names (with standard or modified forms) are used as nicknames. Names become symbols in the literary narrative and the link symbolised – symbolising is not arbitrary, but motivated (we can speak about intra- and extratextual motivation). Thus, there are conventional anthroponyms – certified, standardised names – and unconventional anthroponyms – names created through antonomasia, euphemism, metonymy, metaphor. This paper aims to identify the existing categories of anthroponyms in the literature investigated (fairy tales) and present their structure and function. The corpus is collected from Romanian anthologies of folk and modern fairy tales. Methodologically, the study will use the theoretical apparatus specific to semantics, semiotics, stylistics and ethnolinguistics. |
