Rezumat:This study aims to provide an introduction to the Romanian theoretical discourses which were conceived abroad, focusing on the works of Virgil Nemoianu (Washington Catholic University). For an efficient systematization, we approached the main concepts put forth by the Romanian scholar by a synchronic analysis, so that we may eventually deduce an evolutionary (diachronic) outline of his 40-year theoretical and aesthetic thinking. Another issue addresses directly the influence his work received while crystallizing into a different cultural and social environment. Although not aiming to psychoanalysis the scholar, the study cannot refuse an enticing question of some relevance to his cultural system: can the praise of the secondary (in his own words) be reminiscent of a masked split of his biography which, naturally, couldn’t excise the heredity? Because concepts as the idyllic, the Biedermeier, the secondary or the hospitable canon seem to express the bookish revolt of the lettered Nemoianu’s eastern substance. It is known that what lies behind this intervallic quest is the security of his option for “the positive pole” of dialectics; nevertheless, this certainty is indicative of the fact that the biographic mythos provided to the theoretician his ideological ethos and, consequently, his personal cultural praxis.
