| Rezumat: | We have started this article by discussing the issue of the preposition belonging to the concept of word. As the article has been defined in modern grammars as a morpheme of the category of determination, preposition could be defined as a morpheme of causal reaction. Although it is not a word in the strong meaning of this notion, it must be indexed in the dictionaries because the users need the definition of its meaning. We also state the opinion that the preposition is not self semantic, it has a relational meaning, it cannot appear independent in speech, but only with the word it introduces. Analyzing the way it was defined in dictionaries, we have noticed that, in the old ones, it was defined circularly, by synonyms. As prepositions are on different levels of abstraction, the oldest in language are also the most abstract and with multiple meanings, so that for each meaning there are equivalent new, more concrete prepositions. We have discussed the preposition after, with a medium level of abstraction and we have noticed that its abstract meaning is that of showing consecutiveness of one object toanother, related to a benchmark and a point of observation, and the fact that these benchmarks are spatial, temporal or abstract is context related, it doesn’t belong to the meaning of the preposition, and much less to the nature of objects or actions performed by them. The exemplifying contexts are necessary for the understanding of the abstract definition, but the meaning ofthe words in those contexts is not to be mistaken for the meaning of the preposition itself. |
