The paper aims to provide the reader with a contrastive analysis of some of the most interesting adjectival phraseological synonyms in Romanian and English at the semantic and pragmatic level. First of all, we try to draw up a more refined distinction between different terms used for the notion of phraseologism, following recent theories of English and Romanian linguists. Our purpose is to render the contextual frame in which these phraseologisms occur, looking into their pragmatic, referential and stylistic value, and making a parallel between Romanian and English adjectival phraseological synonyms in terms of use, message and implicature. The main goal is to catch the resemblances and, most importantly, the differences of the ways in which two non-related languages choose to emphasize the description of an object, of a notion or of a state of affairs by using adjectival phraseological expressions. We will also analyze the way their implicature arisen from intentional violation of some rules of conversation affects the discourse. In a contrastive manner, the analysis focuses on the choices a speaker makes in the attempt to emphasize, persuade, embellish their discourse, illustrating the changes the substitution of one phraseological expression with its synonym generate in terms of specific purposes, that is, the extra layer of meaning which is accessible by inference or implicature.
