Rezumat:The aim of this study is to discuss the role of Saint Friday (Sfânta Vineri) in the Romanian popular culture, via comparison of the canonical and apocryphal texts included in the manuscript Codex Sturdzanus (cca 1600). The saint is martyred on a Friday, but before dying, she blesses the Christians who revere the holiness of this day. The tale is an explanation about the particular holy dimension of this day of the week as the day when the saint was murdered and also the day when Christ was crucified. Saint Friday has a positive image in the Romanian popular culture. In stories, this character always helps the main hero to accomplish his objectives or she gives reward to hard-working girls. She gives beauty to young girls and helps them to get married. This trait reveals a connection between the Christian saint and the Roman goddess Venus; besides the Romanian word “vineri” comes from the Latin “Veneris [dies]”. Folk tales and beliefs also exist, which emphasize the saint’s negative image, because she punishes the women who work on this holy day and has thus acquired traits that are characteristic of devils. The results of the study point to a conclusion that the traits of the heroine of the apocryphal text have changed in time, combining Orthodox beliefs and the reality of daily household work.
