Rezumat:The article describes the history and the accomplishments of the Department of Lexicology and Lexicography in Romanian Academy’s “Iorgu Iordan – Al. Rosetti” Institute of Linguistics in the period that spans from 1949 (when the Institute was founded) to 2009 (when the Institute celebrates 60 years of existence). The Department of Lexicology and Lexicography was established in 1959 and concentrated its activity on the making of the Dictionary of Romanian Language, also called the Dictionary of the Academy and subtitled New Series, known under the abbreviated name DLR (Dicţionarul Limbii Române), a work which in fact represents a continuation of the first part of the Dictionary of the Academy, referred to as DA, that appeared from 1907 to 1949. The year 209 marks the successful completion of the Dictionary of Romanian Language, the most important lexicographical work in the history of Romanian linguistics. The Department has also published other fundamental dictionaries for the Romanian culture, such as the Explanatory Dictionary of Romanian Language (Dicţionarul Explicativ al limbii române – DEX) or the Concise Dictionary of Romanian Language of the Academy (Micul Dicţionar Academic al limbii române – MDA), etc. In order to keep up with world-wide tendencies, the Department has recently directed its efforts toward using computers in compiling the dictionary, aiming to make full use of computers in writing the second edition of DLR and third edition of DEX.
