If we chose this title it is because, in spite of the passages quoted above, German translation research is too often ignored or misunderstood. In a first part we will illustrate this with the concept of « Skopostheorie » and with the part played by linguistics in German translation theory. In deed, the Skopostheorie has been interpreted in so many ways that it has been possible to say one thing about it and also exactly the contrary. As for linguistics, certain foreign translation specialists went so far as to make fun of the importance given to linguistics in German translation theory, without taking into consideration the evolution undergone by linguistics after having delivered themselves from structuralism. So, in a second part, we offer an overlook on German translatology as it developed after World War II.
