The present paper points out the identity of the names existing as toponyms within the territories inhabited by Romanians. Its purpose is to determine and define the social, historical, cultural and spiritual issues which have favoured the appearance of the various existing categories of toponyms within the geographical space situated between the Pruth and the Dniestr. We have collected the data we discuss about (pertaining to geography, history, linguistics, folklore, ethnology), which concern names of places and of localities, through field investigations upon their toponymy and due to the study of the documentary sources we have found and the existing local archives.
L’article met en évidence l’identité onymique des toponymes des territoires peuplés par des Roumains et se propose de déterminer et de caractériser les facteurs d’ordre social-historique et culturel-spirituel qui ont favorisé l’apparition de différentes catégories de toponymes dans l’espace géographique situé entre le Prut et le Dniestr. Les données d’ordre géographique, historique, linguistique et ethno-folklorique concernant les noms de lieux et de localités que l’on y discute ont été recueillies par des enquêtes toponymiques de terrain et grâce à des sources documentaires et à des archives.
