In this paper we lay out various ways of representing knowledge. They start from the older and simpler way: the printed dictionary. However useful for linguists and for the general public, the printed dictionary is not able to answer the nowadays needs in linguistics and in interdisciplinary domains that deal with various semantic aspects of language. The advent of computers imposed the development of knowledge representation formalisms such as semantic networks, description logics, conceptual graphs and frame systems. Given the fact that many linguistic resources are used in Natural Language Processing tasks we think that Romanian lexicography and lexical semantics has to catch up with the formalization systems. In this way new competitive Romanian language resources could be developed and used in Artificial Intelligence tasks.
