In this paper, we seek to discuss-within a contrastive perspective (French vs Arabic) - some stylistic effects closely linked to the problem of word order and the ensuing difficulties in translating from one language to another. We tend to demonstrate that-despite the differential regularities of languages-it is still possible to account for the rhetorical and textual functions of certain stylistic procedures such as fronting, ellipsis... that are seldom compromised by translators.
