Abstract: | In the context of a society increasingly marked by forms of fluidity and dynamism, television, subject to the pressure of the new digital media, struggles to align itself to the values of the so-called liquid modernity and fluid journalism (Bauman 2000, 2005; Bivens 2014), to adapt to the „physiognomy” of the contemporary society, marked by vectors of postmodern velocity (globalization, mobility, self-affirmation of the individual through multiple, flexible identities, acceleration of time and condensation of space through technology, etc.). In order to cope with the overflow of information and to perform the function of providing viewers the maximum amount of information in the shortest possible time, television is constantly updating its graphic elements. Thus, television news and talk show programs have embedded crawlers or news tickers as multiple strips of text scrolling horizontally to continually provide news, information. The present research is based on an inventory of linguistic clichés extracted from crawlers, headlines, messages or written information displayed on the TV screen during news programs and political debates, taken especially from the niche channel news (Ediție specială – România TV, Sinteza zilei – Antena 3, Jocuri de putere – Realitatea TV, Digi24, broadcast news). The focus of investigation is primarily on identifying the linguistic behaviour of clichés in the television discourse. From a methodological point of view, we use the theoretical tools provided by semantics, pragmastilistics, lexicology, but we also draw on those provided by media studies (agenda setting, constructivist perspective, etc.). |
