Rezumat:
This paper sets out to investigate the “orientalising” potential of the process of translating postcolonial literature, both in general and with specific reference to the Romanian context. The analysis starts from some of the main theoretical positions in the field of postcolonial (translation) studies, and identifies some of the vulnerabilities of these texts. Various translation approaches are discussed in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. In order to avoid “orientalising” through translation, the translator needs to be familiar with the main theoretical principles of postcolonialism and put together a set of consistent translation strategies, which could ensure the best preservation of the textual hybridity.
Cuvinte-cheie:
postcolonial studies, Orientalism, hybridity, third place of translation
