| Rezumat: | The aim of this study is to give an overview of the evolution of movement rules and extraction contexts from Latin to the Romance languages (here represented by Medieval Italian). Only those movements that target the Left Periphery of the sentence are taken into consideration. While the possibilities of extraction from a complement clause remain unchanged, the possibilities of extraction from phrases are severely reduced: while the extraction of the complement of a head remains possible (except for prepositional phrases, which are islands in the Romance languages), in the medieval language the extraction of a modifier is limited to quantifiers, and in the modern language it is even more reduced. As has long been recognized, this limitation on movement rules that create discontinuities between the elements of a phrase is to be attributed to the loss of case morphology, which in Latin ensured the cohesion of the different parts of a phrase. Another consequence of this morphological change is the progressive replacement of the movement rule of Topicalization with the Clitic Left Dislocation construction, in which the recoverability of the long distance relation is assured by an agreeing clitic in substitution of Latin case agreement. |
