Rezumat:[How should we sign an article in the press?]
This study analyzes for the first time in the Romanian public space a problem very simple or very complicated sometimes, due to the consequences it can generate: it is about the way authors sign their press articles. The idea is that, in the press, as in literature, you cannot go public “ungracefully”, as the poet Ion Barbu used to say. This is the reason why some authors must use pseudonyms, astéronymes, cryptonyms, etc.
Choosing a different name from the one given at birth is necessary for several reasons: the name is either too dull or too common for the readers to remember it (for instance, Ion Popescu); when our name coincides with the name of another personality (an example can be that of a psychologist who signs ... Marin Preda!); when the author does not want to take responsibility for the article for reasons like censorship, ethics, etc. (In my capacity as an editor at “Echinox” magazine I was asked to write an article about the visit of Ceauşescu in Cluj, and I decided to signed it with the pseudonym Romulus Cătan!).
The study highlights some of the common mistakes, explaining their causes: the use of the forename and only the initial of the surname (Cristi N., Mimi D., Rodica S.); failure to correct the spelling of the forename or surname, as they appear in official documents or how they want their bearers: Ioan Aurel Pop, Tatiana Slama Cazacu, George Topârceanu, B. P. Haşdeu, instead of Ioan-Aurel Pop, Tatiana Slama-Cazacu, George Topîrceanu or B. P. Hasdeu); the order in which they are writing their surname and forename, although the Latin origin of the Romanian language requires to reverse order (Ionescu Radu, Vasiliu Mihai, Răchită Irina, instead of Radu Ionescu, Mihai Vasiliu, Irina Răchită).
The article is based on numerous examples from the media and literature, demonstrating the consequences that may appear when the above-mentioned rules are overlooked (confusions in determining the bibliography; if we have people with different backgrounds but with the same names Liviu Rusu, art critic, and Liviu Rusu, musicologist); difficulties in listing the names in an index (Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu will be listed under letter P, but if you leave out the hyphen, the name of the famous writer will be listed under letter B, etc.).
