Rezumat:[The Online Folklore]
This paper aims to conduct an anthropological analysis of a particular type of messages mailed through the Internet, which have an theoretically infinite number of recipients; more exactly, it is about messages that do not convey personalized content to a single recipient since they are meant for a general audience, and that end with the urge to spread the contents to as many virtual recipients as possible. The collection that this paper is based upon was stored during a year and a half, from January 2007 to July 2008, and it makes up a representative sample of text and image. To interpret it, we proposed to use the phrase online folklore, seeing as how the messages collected display a set of features defining of folklore as we know it from the classical textbooks: anonymity (the original sender of the message is unknown), the collective feature (it targets an theoretically infinite number of recipients), the synchretism (it combines text and images, which is technically what a multimedia message means), the traditional structure (numerous messages observe known epical structures, typical for oral narrations). At the same time, these messages demand a new definition of folklore, since they are not conveyed in an oral and direct manner (man to man and mouth to ear), but in a written form, mediated through a non-traditional channel (the Internet), which, in its turn, implies many contextual changes.
