Rezumat:[Translation – an Essential Instrument for the Perception of the Romanian Culture in Europe and Around the World]
Translating an important literary work is never a cultural accident – or, better said, it never becomes an accident. Links to the original are always possible, and the revaluation of the national inheritance cannot stagnate, specificity being a consequence of a long, difficult and worn-out process of confrontation. Specificity cannot be proclaimed, cannot be decided, and it does not make part of a creation program; it is deducted, it is validated at the same time with value and it is distilled throughout confrontation. The idea of perfectionism of the original work of art by means of limiting or ignoring the translation is false both as a cause and as an effect. The bless of the Babel myth consists not only in dropping off a unique language, rejecting the differences, but also in dropping off the myth of a translation without residues, a myth which, if it were possible, would suppress the altering of the other. Towards the plurality and the diversity of the languages which inevitably bring in a real obstacle in the way of comprehension, there is no refuge in the myth, – a unique language, a perfect translation – but in the conception of the translation, whether on a low level or on a high level of understanding of the word. A concrete translation, but at the same time one always proving partial results. We have to consent at giving up the claims to auto sufficiency of our mother language, in favor of the linguistic imperialism, but we have to give up as well the dream of omni potency of a perfect translation, concerning the duplicity of the original. And the resistances which we have to fight against don't concern only the hymeric issue, but also all the real difficulties of the effective translation, which are well-known by a translator.
