| Rezumat: | [The adverb déjà: semantic and pragmatic values (French – Romanian contrastive analysis)] We study the manner in which the semantic and pragmatic values of the French adverb déjà are conserved in Romanian, where the word is of French origin. The analysis of literary bilingual corpora shows that two fundamental meanings can be found in both languages: the ‘continuous meaning’ (a expected but precocious fact e.g. Fr. Il a déjà fini. – Ro. A terminat deja ‘He has already finished’), and the ‘new experience’ meaning (e.g. Fr. As tu déjà été au Louvre? – Ro. Ai fost deja la muzeul Luvru? ‘Have you been to the Louvre before?’). For this second use, Romanian speakers often use the adverb mai (Ro. Ai mai fost la muzeul Luvru?) and they can use both adverbs in the same phrase (Ro. Ai mai fost deja la muzeul Luvru?), a construction impossible in French, where mai is usually translated as encore ‘again, still’ (*As-tu été déjà encore au Louvre?). The adverbs have more or less the same pragmatic values: they trigger the same presuppositions and the same non-natural meanings (e.g. refusal as in Fr. A: – Veux-tu manger avec moi? B: – J’ai déjà mangé. Ro. A: – Vrei să mănânci cu mine? B: – Am mâncat deja. ‘A: – Do you want to have dinner with me? B: – I have already eaten’); as discourse markers both adverbs express the speaker surprise (Fr. A: – Je dois partir. B: –Déjà? Ro. A: – Trebuie să plec. B: – Deja? ‘A: – I have to go. B: – Already?’). The only meaning of the French adverb déjà that in Romanian cannot be expressed by deja is the use indicating forgetfulness (relative recent and informal): Fr. Quel nom, déjà? ‘What was the name again?’ (in Romanian: Şi cum spuneai că îl/o cheamă?). |
