Rezumat:[Reflections on names of characters in Anton Holban’ work]
This study is aimed at revealing the motivation underlying the choice of literary anthroponyms and at highlighting the link between the characters’ names and their personality.
In Anton Holban’s work two major systems of names can be identified:
– a Romanian one, consisting of Romanian first names, specific to the male character and the heroines as well, and
– a foreign one, made up of Western first names, specific to the female characters (names that have a salient Proustian descent, e.g. Odette, or exotic names, e.g. Mitzuko). By singularising his voice (the narrative journey records the voice of one and the same character-narrator throughout), Sandu (whose name is a hypocoristic form of Alexandru and who is the author’s alter ego) reconstructs for the reader the picture of his entire erotic experience. He starts by inventorying the names of the heroines that crossed his path, thereby creating several feminine typologies, such as the girl in the bloom of youth or the femme fatale. Each category is illustrated, at an anthroponymic level, through an onomastic variety that displays some specific stylistic features.
At the same time, the present paper also sets to underline whether the narrator gave a certain symbolic meaning to the anthroponyms or euphonic reasons were exclusively entertained in their selection.
