Rezumat:[Popular and dialectal names of some fungi in Central Italy]
Fungi are living organisms that once were considered vegetables, but nowadays they constitute a kingdom in itself. They are identified by two Latin terms, the so-called binomial nomenclature, which was introduced by the Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné for the vegetable kingdom and adopted universally for all living organism and then for fungi as well. Besides this scientific name, sometimes not easy to memorize, the majority of the most common fungi are known by a popular name, used nationally or regionally, and by a dialectal name, used in a narrow local territory. Thus, the Cantharellus cibarius is known by the popular name of galletto and by many dialectal names, as galluzzo in the territory of Viterbo, gallinella or caglinella in the south of Latium and Campania, and cantarello in some areas of Tuscany.
If scientific names are fundamental as references for the position and classification of the species, popular and dialectal names are important for finding and validating some species in particular environment conditions. With their semantic nuances, they are a source of developing the knowledge about mycological features and details and even about meanings that are sometimes fanciful or possible, but, nevertheless, related to the life and activities of local communities.
