Rezumat: | This article investigates the manner the Romanians from New York preserve a name according to the tradition or adopt new names. In the last case, the people’s name sometimes can become an easier entrance in the new social structure. The entire research is based on the files with the Christian names from the Romanian church “Saints Peter and Paul” from New York in a period between 1998 and 2008. The examination of the given names of the Romanians from New York together with other investigation, based on a direct inquiry, put into evidence three tendencies: 1. An adaptation to the new social structure in the new country, especially after the first generation: Raymond, Karen, Patricia, Jason, Patrick, Lawrence, Brenda, Cassandra, Vanessa, Julia, Katelyn, Anne etc. or translating into English the Romanian names: John, Michael, Nicholas, Gregory; 2. The tendency in preserving the tradition, but adapting the names to the international ones: Adrian, Victor, Elena, Robert, Maximilian, Filip, Eduard etc.; 3. The tendency in maintaining the traditional Romanian names such as Gheorghe, Ion, Ana, Maria, Alexandru, Alexandra, Andrei, Ioana, Ştefan, Gabriel. |
