Rezumat:The article presents the transformation of a village in Maramureş, in the North of Romania, inhabited by the Ukrainian minority. From being rather poor and somewhat discriminated against by the Romanian majority prior to the 90s, this village has become economically successful due to labour migration, one of the main economic strategies in post-communist rural Romania.
Labour migration from Ruscova to Western countries started in the 90s, migrants spreading from Austria to as far as the US. In recent years Ukrainians joined the massive Romanian migration to Italy and Spain. Built on a Ukrainian network, this migration has also benefited from networks formed via the Pentecostal Church.
The migration experiences of the Ukrainians have often been more successful than the Romanians', mainly due to the usefulness of their native language and to their habit of functioning bilingually. This has brought about a change of representation and of economic power, of which the “colonising” of the nearby Romanian village, Leordina is often given as a demonstration. Language competences being very important to this economic success, the perception of the utility of their native Ukrainian language has shifted for the individuals involved.
Many Ukrainians thus discovered a new and very practical use for their language and culture via the changes in the way they can access diverse opportunities; they are linguistically better armed for the adventure of migration than their Romanian counterparts in the current globalising context.
