| Rezumat: | [Ovid and Seneca – Perspectives on Exile in Antiquity] In ancient Rome of the first century AD, the exile had become a common means, at the hands of imperial power, to eliminate uncomfortable personalities from public life. In 8 AD, Augustus banished to Tomis the most appreciated poet of the time, and in 41 A.D., Claudius would do the same as in Seneca’s case, relegating him on the island of Corsica. Beyond the historical circumstances, more or less clear, that led to the exile of the two writers, Latin literature enriched with two different views of exile: that of the poet and that of the philosopher. This paper aims to investigate how Ovid and Seneca relate to the topic of exile, then to highlight the main features of the thinking behind these texts of the two ancient authors. |
