Rezumat:The aim of this paper is to investigate the manner in which the representation of Edith Wharton’s New York is rendered in the Romanian translation of The Age of Innocence, taking as a point of reference theoretical works in the field of translation studies such as Berman (1984), Blum Kulka (1986) and Pym (2004). We will attempt to investigate the extent to which the Romanian translation of the Age of the Innocence and implicitly the representation of Edith Wharton’s New York suffer from “shifts in cohesion and coherence” (Blum Kulka 1984). We will try to emphasize that, while, as was argued by previous researchers, shifts of cohesion and coherence are inherent in any translation (even in a translation by now seen as a pseudo-original), an increased awareness of the mechanisms of literary translation can minimize such shifts.
