Rezumat:[The Forbears of Vaudeville and Promoters of the Zen Carousel] The present paper explores the geographical, ethnic and social background of one of America’s most popular writers: Jerome David Salinger. Despite his popularity, he was not the most prolific American writer. Salinger published one novel and several short stories collections between 1948 and 1965. Because of his insistence on protecting his privacy, there is not much personal information available on him afterwards. This is one of the reasons why critics and editors tend to create false myths and profiteer from Salinger’s genuine talent. What is most intriguing about his writings is that some of the readers consider them funny, others – the saddest ever written. Salinger’s teasing his readers is, perhaps, the secret of his huge popularity. Because he is, in terms of his style, as unfathomable as the Sphinx and the picture of Mona Lisa, no critic has managed so far to accurately depict the inner message of his stories: is it one of hope or is it one of sorrow? Neither, nor. Above all, Salinger is the biggest liar in the book and the “cock-and-bull” stories that his characters must perform are “the jokes that hide the suffering”, the suffering of a young talented writer whose story will be revealed in the following lines.
Cuvinte-cheie:Salinger family, converging points, Jewish and Irish origins, self-reference, spiritual character, Zen Buddhism and Mystical Catholicism
