[The subdivisions of language according to its functions] The aim of this work is to offer a theoretical and critical analysis of the opinions concerning the language division, starting from the specialists’ proposals. The result of the inquiry is that, between language (fr. langue) in Saussurian view and functional language in Coseriu’s theory, it is necessary to admit Ivănescu’s dichotomy folk language – literary language. The folk language has, as important sections, the dialects and, in the same time, literary language has the functional styles.
