The present paper focuses on the main connections between Mateiu Caragiale’s prose and poetry and the symbolist poetry. The symbolist method prefers the evocation and suggestion to discursiveness, totally rejecting the attempt to translate the symbol or to explain its significance. The genuine symbol is fundamentally ambiguous because it can only be associated one meaning.
