Corneille’s tragedies represent a response to the three functions of rhetoric discourse - docere, placere (delectare), movere - addressing both to the spirit and the soul. Corneille’s plays abound not only in reflections, but also in devices wich give them colour. A series of devices are destined to create image, to vividly render the whole range oh human feelings. Corneille uses them at large as persuasive arguments with an increased force, always telling more than necessary to be sure of reaching the aims he proposed.
