Rezumat:Our research is based on the premise that film communication is a particular kind of one-way communication, which implies different aspects and different levels of contact between languages and cultures. The dynamic and complex message, consisting of image and sound, that film is, is built by the transmitter-author using the verbal and nonverbal code and it reflects a certain sociocultural reality. The message transmitted by the author can be either a consistent or an inconsistent totext. Receivers-spectators who don’t use the same verbal code as the author need an intermediary – the translator. Whether it is about dubbing or subtitling, the translator becomes, by his performance, a co-author of the new totext that is the translated movie. Given the permanent interaction between text and image, the film translator must solve problems which are quite more complex and partly different from those raised by the translation of a strictly verbal and written text.
Using a corpus that consists of various films which we had studied comparatively – original version (in English with possible cues in other languages), French translation (dubbing) and Romanian tranlation (subtitles) – we have noticed that: a) film dubbing leads to a more obvious cultural decontextualisation of the consistent source messages; b) the translator proceeds on the one hand to a contextual anchoring into the culture of the receiver public, on the other hand to a certain verbal recontextualisation into the sociocultural space that is being visualised, in order to rebuild, even if just occasionally, the necessary consistence between text and image; c) the positions of the communicating characters are related in different ways in French and in Romanian (this relation is visible in the choice of address pronouns), as translators base their tranlation on the cultural tradition of each society.
