Rezumat: | Maurice Chappaz is an outstanding Francophone Swiss writer. Our interest in his monumental work has started several years ago, and it has enabled us to open an important field in the study of the dynamics of identity in European Francophone literature. Space is granted particular attention throughout the work of the writer. Titles such as Journal intime d’un pays, Le Valais au gosier de grive, Tendres Campagnes, La Haute Route du Jura, Bienheureux les lacs, Testament du Haut-Rhône etc., clearly underline this aspect. Particularly interested in the practice of translation and in the study of space in literature, we have considered that the work of Maurice Chappaz offers a particularly productive field to our preoccupations. This study, which is dedicated to the cultural dimensions of the translation of the literary text, is based on two texts by Chappaz. The former, placed at the edge of the poetic narrative and of the prose poem, is entitled Chant des cépages romands. The latter is a long free verse poem, called Vocation des fleuves. Both texts represent a real challenge to the translator. Our reflexion will be structured around the following questions: the typology of the space, toponyms, culturemes, poetry as translation of another language, the multilingual and multicultural context – its influence on Chappaz’s expression of the space. The theoretical issues of translating space in these two poems by Maurice Chappaz will be illustrated through results of our own practice of translation. |
