Rezumat: | I intend to show how Camil Petrescu uses art description (ekphrasis) in order to associate different symbolic values to his characters: by comparing Ella to a madonna and Emilia to La Goulue, a famous cabaret dancer, Rubens´s Venus, or to nudes painted by Picasso or Favorv (in Fred Vasilescu´s vision) and to Titien´s Lavinia (in Ladima´s eyes), Camil Petrescu proves to be among the first Romanian writers who understands the use of such a rhetorical device. As a theorist of the modern novel, Camil Petrescu could not have overseen the importance of ekphrasis (art description) in Proust´s novel. The Romanian novelist transforms the proustian technique of ”ekphrastic love” (Swan falls in love with Odette´s when he notices her resemblance to a Botticellian character). A secondary objective of this paper to show how Modernist art, and especially the Avant-garde, is reflected in Camil Petrescu´s novels. |
