Rezumat:Ionesco is deeply marked by his double culture, French and Romanian, the result of a childhood spent time and again in one and then the other of the two countries. The man is looking for a nationality and, above all, for a language. Certainly he had to learn, again and again, during his youth, the Romanian and the French language as he was moving into one or the other of these two countries. During his adolescence, he will appropriate the language of the place where his family’s life circumstances led him. Once definitively settled in France, he will remain a great admirer of certain Romanian writers, philosophers and poets.
His being elected as part of the French Academy in 1970 marks his spectacular integration into the French national culture. However, this change of nationality left traces in the playwriter’s spirit, as he cannot forget that he was born and he lived a long time in Romania. His last two plays render his double geographical roots, through a constant interrogation on the places.
