Rezumat:Identity is one of the central issues in Paul Auster’s novels, be they fiction or nonfiction ones. One of the primary means of constructing identity is through social interaction, as the individual defines himself in relation to the others. Another means of identity construction within the fictional or nonfictional world is through direct narration (or direct definition, according to Schlomith Rimmon-Kenan). Also, identification with a certain group, thus giving up to one’s individuality and adhering to the principles of a group, represents another means of identity construction and Auster employs these modalities within his writings in order to create truthful characters as actors on the fictional/real stage of his pieces of writing.
