Abstract: | This study aims at bringing a few clarifications and follow-ups regarding objects (not adverbials), whose number is established at seven, by the new Gramatica limbii române (Grammar of Romanian Language), the 2005 edition. This option is justified through ‘facts’ of a strict grammatical nature: objects appear as determiners, generally obligatory after a verb, adjective, adverb or interjection, while adverbials (circumstantials) are, with few exceptions, optional. This situation should not be surprising, as it has its roots in a more profound delineation of their characteristic features (the secondary object, the prepositional object), through a new vision on determinations (the possessive object), or, through a new approach of the function of completion (the comparative object). Then, the principle of uniqueness is added, which assumes “the impossibility of the existence of a second subordinate item, within the dependence on a main item, which is constructed in the same way as a given one”. In order to motivate the statute of some objects, we have extended the research to the situation that exists in Latin, and facts proved that the internal object should be considered as a function on its own, exactly as the comparative or the possessive objects. Consequently, we have established the number of objects at eight (direct, secondary, internal, indirect, prepositional, agent, possessive and comparative). This extension will not lead to a more difficult understanding of grammatical facts, but to a more adequate syntactic analysis. |
