Abstract:[Anthroponyms in the names of firms in Sighetu Marmației]
The onomastics in the contemporary public space is based on a performative act of naming, which is determined by the message intended by the owner. The use of anthroponyms in the denomination of businesses is motivated through the need for individualisation, manifested especially after 1989. The anthroponym included in the name of a firm becomes both a signifier and a signified. The structure of the denominations, the calque formations which develop foreign models, are representative of the mentality of the members of the community in Sighet, who embrace western influences. The borrowing of anthroponyms from international languages is a consequence of bilingualism and of the influence conveyed by the media. The illustration of the psychosocial conditions that have led to a system of denomination based on anthroponyms, proves necessary in a time when personal names, other than Romanian ones, are in style.
