Abstract: | I present the distributional and semantic properties of the construction N+def.art.–cel– Modifier in contemporary Romanian, and I argue that a number of constructions of old Romanian (cel–N–Modifier, cel–Modifier–N, N-def A-def) represent variants of this construction, relying on a common underlying structure. I show that modifiers introduced by cel can be both non-restrictive and restrictive. Based on the restrictive use, which cannot be derived from the non-restrictive one, I analyze these modifiers as predicates of DP-internal reduced relatives. Adopting an analysis of relatives along the lines of Bianchi (1999) and Bhatt (2002), I propose that the reduced relative (represented as the nominalization of a predicate phrase, a NomP embedding a PredP) is selected by cel, which heads the DemP, situated immediately below DP. The NP is attracted in SpecDem and its definiteness marking serves to license the D-level. The proposal that cel is Dem is based on the interpretation of this construction, which, in the case of the restrictive use, appears to differ from intersective modification without cel by signaling familiarity with the referent described by the complex property formed by the noun phrase and the modifier. The proposal that double definiteness in Romanian involves a single DP (rather than two) is further supported by the existence, in old Romanian, of constructions with the same interpretation (including the necessary presence of a modifier) in which cel heads the DP and there is no other determiner. |
