Abstract: | [Novel lexical resource from revised “Milescu” version of the Old Testament] The paper represents an important contribution to a better knowledge of the lexic’s development with one of the most significant Romanian old texts, i.e. the whole version of the Old Testament, created between 1661–1664, at Constantinople, by the renown Romanian scholar and politician Nicolae Milescu Spătarul (1636–1708). Being a translation of the Septuagint, the first version of Milescu’s text went through subsequent revisions and it has been preserved in Ms. 45, kept in the Library of the Romanian Academy, the Branch of Cluj. It was this particular text which became the basis of the Bible of Bucharest (1688), representing the first whole Romanian printed version of the Scripture. Still unpublished, the monumental text (over 900 pages of Cyrillic manuscript) was yet barely researched by experts. The author of this text leads a team of philologists which prepare a critical whole edition of the manuscript. They have chosen and presented analytically from the exhaustive index of the edition a series of almost 900 lexical units which were unknown or almost unknown by lexicographers, many of them being attested for the first time (hapax legomena). These are especially direct contextual borrowings, Grecisms, Hebraisms, Romanian adaptations of Slavonic words, but also old or popular words rarely used, spontaneous lexical developments, etc. The author’s intention was to put at the experts’ disposal, especially the ones which are editing the academic Dictionary of Romanian Language (DLR, in Romanian), an extremely valuable novel lexical resource. |
